Public Policy & Research
Taking action with the British Film Institute to help secure the future of film.

The Question
Could we find a better approach to a proposed 10 year project that would create new storage and conservation facilities, develop new digital infrastructure and, potentially, open a new public engagement centre telling the story of film through immersive digital technologies?
What we did
Over an eight week period, we took the proposed business case for the project apart, and showed that it needed to be put back together in a different way. The project, called Screen Archive of the Future, had got too big and unwieldy to be investable. We showed that if it was broken down into its component parts, and rethought as a programme rather than one huge project, urgent areas could be quickly turned into business cases, and further planning work could be carried out on areas where there were many outstanding questions.
What happened
The BFI listened to our advice - and acted. They took our suggestions to their board, and we started work very soon after on a business case for urgently needed new storage facilities.
